da.nu.lo archive
da.nu.lo was the music project I instigated back around 1997. Here's all the music available on archive.org along with a bit of blurb from 2006.
Being Carla: The Soundtrack (2001)
We've Been Waiting For You! EP (2003)
Demos and Others (1999 onwards)
Sounds like "do you know any Black Sabbath?" to me.........
During the years of 1997 - 1999, after chancing upon a machine capable of manipulating sounds, the formative da.nu.lo began recording their audio musings. The first collection was cobbled together and released as “Music For Dogs” towards the end of 1999. While human voices do appear throughout the album (preachers, reporters & Elvis amongst others) there are no da.nu.lo "songs" as such.
The band at that time was just Harri (Stu) and Slowrists (Mase). Cruzoe, DJ Billy (AS) & Capital Jackson had yet to contribute although it was Capital Jackson (Mart) who coined the albums title, “Music For Dogs”. The notion that dogs hear different frequencies and would have unique albums recorded just for them (indeed such products are now available) made absolute sense and as the band didn't know whether such things could be recorded, decided to call the album by the title is known as today through sheer joy of the notion. A cult release indeed.
"I need a new machine....."
The new millennium dawned and as if by magic, Cruzoe appeared. Sporting an unhealthy looking beard and hippy low strung voice to match, the voice behind da.nu.lo contributed his somewhat improvised laments to the soup. Add also one Capital Jackson & DJ Billy (AS) (Dean…..AS? use your imagination....good guess! you filthy person) on keyboards and atmospherics respectively, the band released their next offering. Thanks to the increasing popularity of the Internet, da.nu.lo were beginning to get about a bit. As luck would have it, LA music guru Jon Huck, heard a demo by the band and began playing it on his radio show (the track would later be released on the “Short Shacks Time EP” as "Wish Sixty"). The subsequent blossoming relationship between the two parties gave the band a somewhat unexpected break. Jon was currently compiling music for a project on the blockbuster movie, The Matrix. The Matrix Revisited, a behind the scenes look at how the movie was made, included a track by none other than da.nu.lo. The track used, “I'm Not Right (I'm What’s Left)” features on “The Sex Life Of Plants” EP. A further da.nu.lo track, “Noodle Fat” featured on the making of the second Matrix movie. Info can be found here. Remixes of Jon's band, "The Fur Ones" also ensued.
"Don’t go assuming that we’re any good……..."
2001 was an eventful year. An approach from an independent film maker saw the band recording the score for the film "Being Carla". To this date, it has become impossible to find any information on the production or any trace of the film. It's as if the film never existed. But to prove it did, the “Being Carla” soundtrack is available over at lumu. You'll just have to imagine the action for yourself or even make another "Being Carla".Due to the illness of Harri's mom, the following songs were not completed or released. This emotionally affected music can now be heard on the Lumu website (albeit in a very sketchy / demo idea way)
“Cruzoe’s gone all Robinson…..”
The next release was an instrumental offering. Not by choice, just the fact that Cruzoe had gone AWOL and no one else offered to take vocal responsibilities. At least more emphasis was put on the bands production style and technique which came through in the diversity of the tracks. Later in the year Cruzoe returned with no explanation as to his absence. Not that the band were bothered, just relieved they could use him again as the focus for their sounds. “Bedroom Secrets” hinted at where Mr Cruzoe may have been hiding……“Out-fatting the fatboy………”
A compilation of new and older tracks became the “Short Shacks Time” EP, another instrumental selection and by far the most samplicious, groovy, cheesemiestering the band had offered to date.Later that year the band went to the other extreme and released a selection of dark minimalism in the shape of “We’ve Been Waiting For You”. The band’s sudden diversion highlighted their no-compromise attitude and found them developing a more abrasive sound to their expansive audio palette.
“We must be getting old………”
2004 saw the band delve further into dark, minimal experimentation with “Tumour Music” a crazed trifle of warped beats and uneasy sounds, destroying any lingering expectations of the band. Incidentally, they were cited as being influenced by the likes of Esquivel, Hyman, Kid Baltan and Rolf Harris at the time……..“There’s no escaping the dirge of the sub-genre…..we, my friends, are doomed”
A quiet period would follow as the band took stock and worked on other projects (Harri instigated 'Routine' with Daddylonglegs). A few departures and other lifestyle re-arrangements took place and a solitary release, about trains and dreams about trains came forth.“Only one thing unites and divides man equally......Alcohol”
Back on form 2006 saw the appearance of Gardensuite. A concept EP about a lad’s drug induced experiences and afterthoughts whilst wandering around his back garden. The EP features a 5 part epic entitled “The Joys Of Lepidoptery” based on the artwork of Lord Whimsey. Final mastering, production and vocals are yet to be completed, but the demos are now available. And so the story continues, the truths twist and the protagonists grow older. One thing cannot be denied, the music!. Has this ever been anything other than da.nu.lo?
To the Future................
